Who is Black Sam Malone? What is Black Sam Malone? The easy answer is a DIY punk band from Minneapolis, MN with a goofy name. But if you look under the surface you will find a band that creates aggressively frantic music wrapped around doomed, nihilistic lyrics sung with deep conviction and verocity. Songs that are full of fuzzed-out, driving guitars over the top of primal, bashing drums with synthesizer melodies nomadically carrying the songs to a no wave infused noise soundscape.

The fall of 2018 marks the release of a new 5 song EP from BSM called "We Will All Be Replaced." It's a collection of fast paced, fuzzed out, frantic songs that pushes the band's sound further down the path they have always been on. The EP was recorded at Ecstatic Studio by Ali Jaafar over two Monday nights in August. In usual DIY Black Sam Malone fashion, the packaging was all stamped, screen printed and photocopied by hand to match the band's gritty sound.

Black Sam Malone was started in the spring of 2014 by Aaron LeMay (International Espionage!, Diver Dress and the Mark Mallman band) and his old friend Adam Hozempa (Karate Break, New McCarthy) over a last call beer after their pizza delivery shift, like so may other bands. After a couple of practices and a couple of shows in some MPLS basements, Aaron and Adam agreed the band did not sound enough like Devo. So they called up their friend Brock Scholze to add some synthesizer to expand the sound and make it more dynamic. With Brock in the band they focised on writing and on crafting their sound. In the spring of 2015 they released their debut 3-song cassette, "Let's dance at the mouth of the pit." on the Minneapolis Record Collective label. Over the next year and a half they played countless shows in basements, diy spaces, dive bars and clubs in MPLS and around the midwest. In the spring of 2017 they released another cassette; this time it was an 11-song full-lengther called "Black Sam Malone is a band, and this is their music." that pushed their music into an even more fuzzed-out world. After the release, the 3 members once again wanted to change things up, so they asked their friend Jenna Borrelli to play bass and their friend Aaron Sapp (Inernational Espionage!, Red Phone Dispatch) to jump in on second guitar. Now as a 5-piece the sound of the band continued to grow, and in April of 2018 they released 2 songs on a split 7" they put out with friends Total Gaze.

Throughout the years, BSM has shared the stage with some great national bands like Jacuzzi Boys, Toranavox and Flesh Lights, as well as Minneapolis's finest France Camp, Nightosaur and Teenage Moods, and will continue to fight the good DIY fight!
